Project Summary

The Norfolk Southern Engineering Building is a new office for engineers and operators that includes a 1100 sf conference room, 3,958 sf of locker room space, train track supervision offices, superintendent terminals, and yardmaster and policing rooms.

The project required demolition of their existing facility which consisted of a 4500 sf yard office and three adjacent smaller buildings for locker rooms.  The new building enabled Norfolk to operate completely under one roof rather than separate out-lot buildings.

The engineering building is located just to the west of downtown Cincinnati, adjacent to their north-south train route.  The site happened to above a 70 year old riverbed causing the soils to be too unstable to build upon.  Over 200 driven steel H-piles  at 97’ long each were required in order to reach bedrock and stabilize the foundation.

The building is a structural steel frame with a standing seam metal panel roof and metal ribbed panel siding.
